Do you want to know the best YouTube equipment for beginners to use this year? Well, you've come to the right place! In this article, we'll give you a rundown of the essential equipment you need to get started on YouTube and some helpful tips on how to use it.

Becoming a content creator has many benefits, including helping or entertaining people and getting rewarded for your efforts. Focus on producing engaging content regularly with the right equipment.

If you persevere, you'll soon be able to monetize your YouTube channel via the YouTube Partner Program. You will also probably sell digital products using one of the best online course platforms!

Here is the equipment you need to start a YouTube channel:

1 – Camera

First things first, you're going to need a camera. You don't need the latest and greatest DSLR to start making videos, but you need something that can be recorded in HD.

Many smartphones these days can record in HD, so if you have a newer phone, you may already have a decent camera.

Here are the main options you have when looking for the best YouTube equipment for beginners:

  1. Smartphone
  2. DSLR camera (recommended)
  3. Mirrorless camera (recommended)
  4. APS-C camera
  5. Webcam

Option 1: Smartphone

The most important is to get started and start learning. If you're starting out, I recommend you use your smartphone as it's something you already have.

Most recent smartphones can shoot in high definition. For example, the latest iPhone or Samsung Galaxy can shoot in 4K.

Make sure to get a good tripod, so your videos are steady and clear.

You can always upgrade in the future by investing in a DSLR camera when you see some early success on YouTube.

Option 2: DSLR camera (Recommended, often cheap)

My Take

I use my smartphone and the Canon EOS REBEL SL3 DSLR with its standard EF-S 18-55mm lens to create more engaging videos by shooting from two angles simultaneously. It makes your video more dynamic, encouraging people to watch it for extended periods. This, in turn, will make your YouTube channel more successful.

Here is the list of the best DSLR cameras for beginners. They are all perfect for starting a YouTube channel. They all have a large APS-C sensor with 24MP, a microphone port, and a fully articulated screen. You can rotate the screen vertically and horizontally to see yourself when recording videos.

  • If you're on a budget, take the T7i
  • If you can afford more, take the SL3
  • If you want the best and love action shooting, take the T8i.

Canon EOS REBEL SL3

Canon EOS Rebel SL3

It's the DSLR I bought for my YouTube videos. I recommended it because:

  •  It's cheap,
  • It can shoot videos in 4K,
  • It has an external audio jack, so you can connect an external microphone to have excellent audio recording quality.

Canon EOS Rebel T7i

Canon EOS T7i

I don't recommend the Canon EOS Rebel T7, even if it's cheap. Indeed, it doesn't support 4K videos (only full HD 1920×1080 px), and it doesn't have an audio jack to plug an external microphone.

However, if you're on a budget, consider using the Canon EOS Rebel T7i instead. Indeed, it has WiFi support and a 2.5mm mic jack to connect an external microphone, even if it doesn't support 4K videos.

Canon EOS Rebel T8i

Canon EOS T8i

The T8i replaced the T7i. You get 4K video capability (UHD 3840 x 2160 px) and more advanced features. This camera also has excellent image stabilization, autofocus, and an external microphone port for high-quality audio recording.

Should I choose the Canon T7i or T8i?

Take the T8i if you want 4K videos, better general image quality, more features, a more compact body, and more value for the money.

Should I choose the SL3 or T8i?

I took the SL3. Both DSLRs are good for YouTube videos; you can choose one or the other. Both cameras have a microphone port plus an articulated screen.

The T8i is more recent than the SL3, but you don't need its extra capabilities for shooting YouTube videos.

  • If you also like to take pictures of moving objects, choose the T8i. Why? It has better autofocus (45 focus points instead of 9), more shooting speed (7.5 fps instead of 5), digital video stabilization, and anti-flicker.
  • However, the SLR3 has a better battery life (1070 shots vs. 800) and is a bit lighter (449g vs. 515g) as it's smaller than the T8i.

Option 3: Mirrorless camera (Recommended for best results)

Canon EOS M50 Mark II

Best Affordable Mirrorless Camera for Beginners

My Take

This mirrorless camera is one of the best YouTube equipment for beginners, straightforward to use, and perfect for vlogging and YouTube video content in HD or 4K with amazing colors.

The M50 Mark II is a small camera that is easy to take with you wherever you go. It is also designed for comfort with excellent ergonomics.

Canon EOS M50 Mark II

It has a flip-out screen so you can see yourself when filming videos. You can connect an external microphone using the mic jack.

The autofocus is excellent—it's fast and reliable, tracking objects and people in real time with built-in face tracking that makes it easy to record yourself. Autofocus is so critical when shooting videos.

Using the Canon M adapter, you can mount EF and EF-S lenses on the M50 Mark II camera, giving you a much wider selection of lens options! You can also add a speed booster later to use professional L series lenses on this camera. You will expand your field of view to come close to having a full-frame sensor size.

  • 24MP APS-C sensor.
  • Flip-out screen
  • 10 FPS (frames per second) photo shooting with continuous autofocus.
  • 4K UHD videos or Full HD 1080p videos up to 60 FPS. However, there are better cameras for 4K. Indeed, when using 4K videos, you get lots of cropping/zoom, and it doesn't use the full 24MP sensor; you get about half of the megapixels, so it's not so sharp and detailed.
  • Live broadcast on YouTube without a computer.

Verdict

If you are new to creating YouTube videos, this camera is an excellent choice. Indeed, it's budget-friendly while still meeting your shooting needs, especially when shooting in full HD.

Unlike the original M50, with the M50 Mark II, you can also do live streaming to YouTube without using a computer, as the camera can connect directly to your YouTube account.

Canon EOS RP

Best Full-frame Mirrorless Camera for beginners

Canon EOS RP

My Take

It's a full-frame Mirrorless camera, perfect for traveling, vlogging, and all video content. You will get incredible images and YouTube videos with great colors. The Canon EOS RP is ideal for content creators!

Create beautiful sharp, detailed videos in HD or 4K with Canon's EOS RP. This camera is effortless to use while still providing excellent image quality, making it one of the best YouTube cameras for beginners.

The EOS RP gives you stunning video quality that will impress your viewers. It's due to its 26.2MP full-frame sensor, 4K video capabilities, and DIGIC 8 image processor.

It's a small, lightweight camera that is easy to carry. The autofocus is fantastic, with excellent tracking capabilities and face detection. You can shoot in 4K, but it will crop the sensor, so it's not ideal.

It has a flip-out screen and an external microphone port so that you can get great audio for your videos.

  • 26MP full-frame sensor.
  • 4K and Full HD video. 4K at up to 25 FPS. Full HD at up to 60 FPS.
  • Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus: it's the best autofocus system for video on a Canon camera, with excellent face detection and eye tracking.
  • Flip-out screen.
  • Microphone port.
  • Up to 5 FPS photo shooting (it's good if you're not a sports photographer).
  • Small and Lightweight body, robust-built.
  • Lenses: RF line for mirrorless cameras, super sharp, also compatible with all legacy Canon EF lenses via an adaptor. Sharper, faster, and cheaper than DSLR lenses.
  • WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity.
Cons
  • No shutter flap to protect the sensor from dust, so be careful when changing lenses.
  • Not weather sealed: you can't use it in rainy or dusty environments.

If these drawbacks are significant to you, upgrade to the Canon EOS R that has a shutter flap and is weather-sealed. The EOS R is a great camera, but it's more expensive and unnecessary for beginners. Indeed, if you want to make excellent videos in everyday environments, the EOS RP is a cheaper alternative that will work just fine.

Verdict

The Canon EOS RP is the best Canon camera for vlogging and YouTube if you're on a budget and want a full-frame. It's small, lightweight, and has excellent autofocus for video. The only downside is the 4K video quality. However, it shoots beautiful videos in full HD.

The EOS RP is an excellent camera for anyone starting with YouTube videos or vlogging. It's budget-friendly and gives you beautiful image quality. I recommend this camera to anybody who wants to get into making video content.

Nikon Z6 FX-Format

Mirrorless Camera

Nikon Z6 FX-Format Mirrorless Camera

The next camera on our list is the Nikon Z6 FX-Format Mirrorless Camera. It's much more expensive than the previous two options we've looked at. The Nikon Z6 will set you back around $2,000.

But what do you get for that high price tag?

Well, the Nikon Z6 is a full-frame camera with 24.5 megapixels. It can shoot in 4K and has a built-in mic. Plus, it has WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, so you can easily transfer your videos to your computer or phone.

Verdict

The Nikon Z6 is an excellent option for those who are serious about YouTube and are looking for a high-quality camera. However, it is a bit out of the price range for beginners.

Which mirrorless camera should you choose?

Take the Canon EOS M50 Mark II if you're on a budget and the Canon EOS RP if you can afford the extra spending and want a more advanced camera with a full-frame sensor.

Option 4: APS-C Camera

APS-C cameras are usually more portable than DSLRs or their mirrorless equivalent, making them a great choice for vloggers who are always on the go.

Here are the best options for an APS-C Camera that will help you get started on your YouTube journey:

Option 5: Webcam (for live streaming)

Webcams are suitable for live-streaming videos because they are inexpensive and easy to set up.

Here are our recommendations for the best webcams for live streaming:

2 – Microphone

Audio-Technica AT2020 USB+

I bought this microphone, and I absolutely love it. It's a great all-around microphone you can use for podcasting, a headshot YouTube channel, faceless channels, or even for gaming.

Audio-Technica AT2020USB+ microphone

The audio quality is exceptional, and you can easily connect it to your computer through USB.

It's also cheap, coming in at only $100.

However, it's very sensitive, so you should use it in a quiet environment. Otherwise, you'll end up picking up a lot of background noise. I remove the background noise coming from my laptop fan near the microphone using Camtasia.

Just a click and you're good to go!

Pros

  • The audio quality is excellent.
  • Inexpensive.
  • USB connection.

Cons

  • The microphone is very sensitive, so you need to be in a quiet environment. It picks up a lot of background noise if you need to be more careful.

I highly recommend this microphone to anyone serious about starting a YouTube channel.

Logitech Blue Yeti USB Microphone

The Blue Yeti is one of the most popular USB microphones for YouTube videos and podcasting. It's a great all-around microphone that is simple to set up and use. The Blue Yeti is an excellent choice for your first microphone if you're starting out.

Blue Yeti USB microphone

Pros:

– Excellent sound quality

– Easy to use

– Versatile

Cons:

– Slightly expensive

The Blue Yeti is one of the best options if you're looking for a high-quality, versatile USB microphone. It's perfect for YouTube videos, podcasting, and more.

Rode Shotgun Microphone

The Shotgun microphone is one of the most popular microphone types for shooting YouTube videos. It is highly directional, meaning that it picks up sound primarily from the direction it points, making it great for recording someone speaking directly into the camera.

Rode VideoMic Pro R microphone

You can mount your Shotgun microphone on top of your camera or attach it to a boom pole to keep it close to your face for a beautiful acoustic effect.

Here is a list of the best Shotgun microphones I recommend you check out:

Verdict

The Rode Shotgun Microphone is a must-have if you are starting out with YouTube. It is relatively inexpensive and produces clear directional audio. It is also relatively small and lightweight, making it easy to transport.

Lavalier Lapel Microphone

These microphones are a great option for those new to vlogging or YouTube videos.

Also, Lavalier lapel microphones are great for vloggers and headshot videos because they allow you to move around freely without worrying about holding a microphone.

Clip the microphone onto your shirt and position it close to your mouth; you're good to go!

Here are the best Lavalier microphones I recommend if you want to shoot YouTube videos:

Pop filter

You need a pop filter to protect your microphone from the explosive sounds of consonants like “p” and “b” when recording your voice.

A pop filter is a must-have for any serious YouTuber or vlogger.

It attaches to the end of your microphone and blocks out unwanted noise.

They are very cheap, costing just a few dollars, so there's really no excuse not to have one.

You can easily find the pop filter that suits your microphone on Amazon.

3 – Tripod

A tripod will help you produce steadier and higher-quality videos than if you were holding the camera in your hand. In addition, a tripod will allow you to film yourself more easily, which is essential if you're starting a vlog or other type of personal YouTube channel.

So if you're serious about making quality YouTube videos, invest in a good tripod. It will make all the difference in the final product.

Here are the tripods I recommend you use depending on your needs:

Fluid head tripod

A fluid head tripod is a must-have for anyone planning to move around while filming their videos.

The fluid head allows you to pan and tilt smoothly, following your movement without shaking the camera.

Here are the best fluid head tripods I recommend:

Photo tripod

I recommend using something other than a photo tripod for filming your YouTube video because you can't pan or tilt with it to follow your movement. Using a video tripod with a fluid head moving in all directions is better.

However, photo tripods are often cheaper, so if you don't plan on moving when shooting videos, they can be a good option.

Here's the photo tripod I recommend:

4 – Lighting

Good lighting is essential for any video, whether a vlog, interview, or tutorial. I recommend using natural light whenever possible. You can film near a window during the day or outside if it's not too sunny. However, the sun often plays hide and seek.

If you're filming indoors, you can use lamps to create soft, diffused light. I recommend using two lamps on either side of the camera to create even lighting.

You can invest in professional lighting equipment if you want to take your lighting up a notch. It's cheap and easy to set up, and it will make a big difference in the quality of your videos.

Here are some of the best lighting kits I recommend:

Softboxes

I bought this kit of two lamps, and I'm delighted with it.

Softboxes are a great way to add some extra light without creating harsh shadows. They have diffusion panels that reduce the intensity of direct light.

They give off a lot of light, and the price is unbeatable. The color temperature of 5500K imitates natural sunlight and is perfect for YouTube videos.

Ring Light

Here is my recommendation for the best ring light:

This ring light is great for close-up shots, makeup tutorials, and vlogging. It's very affordable and easy to set up.

I recommend using a ring light only if you don't wear glasses because you will have the reflection of the lamp on your glasses, ruining your video.

However, suppose you don't wear glasses. In that case, a ring light is an excellent option for YouTube videos because it evenly illuminates your face.

5 – Laptop

You can use your PC or Mac to edit your videos. Be aware, however, that this requires a lot of resources. You will need a good processor; an Intel Core i5 or higher will do.

Try with your current laptop; if you experience too much lag, you will need to upgrade.

6 – Best Software for Youtube

You need to use software to create and edit your YouTube videos. Luckily, there are many options available.

Here is a list of the best software for YouTube:

Video Editing Software

Creating high-quality videos for YouTube requires more than just a good idea and a quality camera. You need to use video editing software to make your videos look their best. This software can help you with everything from basic editing tasks like trimming footage to more complex functions like color correction and adding special effects.

Camtasia

Camtasia is an easy-to-use screen recording and video editing software. It's great for beginners because it's very user-friendly and has many features.

I use it to edit all my YouTube videos, and I highly recommend it. Edit your video footage in no time with Camtasia!

Adobe Premiere Pro

Adobe Premiere Pro

The best software for YouTube videos is Adobe Premiere Pro. It's a professional video editing software used by YouTubers, filmmakers, and television editors.

Adobe Premiere Pro is a more advanced video editing software used by professionals. It has more features than Camtasia but is also more complicated to use.

If you're starting out, I recommend using Camtasia. It's an easier program to use and will still allow you to create great-looking videos.

However, Adobe Premiere Pro is the better option if you're more advanced in your video editing skills or if you plan on doing more complex edits.

Photo Editing Software (thumbnails)

If you're hoping people will watch your videos, make sure your thumbnails are great. For that, you'll need photo editing software. Here are the best options:

Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop: best software for sublimation printing

Adobe Photoshop is the best option for creating thumbnails for your YouTube videos. It is the industry-leading photo editing software used by professional photographers and graphic designers.

However, if you're a beginner, I recommend using Canva. It's much easier to use, and it's free.

Canva

Canva graphic design software for sublimation printing

Canva is an online design software that's free to use and easy to learn. It's great for creating thumbnails because it has a wide variety of templates and tools that you can use to make your thumbnail stand out.

Screen Recording Software

You can use Camtasia to record your screen when you create how-to videos or demos for your YouTube channel. The software is available for both Windows and Mac. It offers a free trial, so you can try it before you buy.

If you're a Mac user, you can also use QuickTime Player to record your screen. QuickTime Player comes pre-installed on all Mac computers, so you don't have to download anything.

Whiteboard Animation Software

Doodly is one of the most popular whiteboard animation software on the market. Doodly is an excellent choice for beginners because it is simple to use and has a wide variety of options.

Youtube SEO Software

If you want people to find your videos, you need to optimize them for YouTube search. This process is called YouTube SEO (Search Engine Optimization). And the best way to do YouTube SEO is by using some software.

TubeBuddy

TubeBuddy is a great YouTube SEO software because it allows you to do keyword research, track your progress, and see how your videos perform.

Try TubeBuddy

VidIQ

VidIQ is a great option for optimizing your YouTube videos. It's a Chrome extension that gives you insights into what keywords you should target, how to improve your thumbnail, and more.

Youtube Video Script

Jasper AI

Jasper AI copywriting software

Jasper is an AI-powered video scripting software. This Jasper AI content platform is great for YouTubers who want to save time on writing their video scripts.

The AI copywriting tool can generate scripts for all kinds of videos, including product reviews, vlogs, and how-tos.

7 – Optional Equipment

Here is a list of some optional equipment for starting a YouTube channel:

  • Teleprompter: Glide Gear TMP100 and the PromptSmart Pro app.
  • Acoustic soundproof foam panels.
  • Backdrop (Green Screen).
  • Camera Lenses.

FAQ

Should I choose a DSLR camera or a mirrorless camera?

With the new technology of mirrorless cameras, most camera manufacturers have prioritized mirrorless systems. So, mirrorless is the future. However, DSLRs are still very popular.

You will be thrilled with the photo and video quality, whether DSLR or mirrorless, no matter which camera you choose.

The main difference between the two is that DSLRs have a mirror inside the camera that reflects the image onto the sensor. The mirror then flips up when you take a picture and allows light to hit the sensor and create an image. Mirrorless cameras don't have this mirror, so the image is created directly onto the sensor.

This design makes mirrorless cameras smaller and lighter, as there is no need for extra space to house the mirror. It also makes them quieter, as there is no mirror flipping up when you take a picture.

Regarding performance, mirrorless cameras have reached the same level as DSLRs for autofocus speed, and they even exceed them regarding frame coverage and tracking features.

However, DSLRs have been around for much longer, so they are generally cheaper. They also tend to have better battery life as the mirrorless system is more power-hungry.

So, which should you choose?

If you want a cheaper camera with an optical viewfinder that may last longer, go for a DSLR.

If you want a smaller, lighter camera that is quieter and takes just as good of pictures and videos, go for a mirrorless camera.

Key takeaway: Mirrorless cameras display an electronic image in the electronic viewfinder, while DSLRs use mirrors to show an optical image in the viewfinder when taking a photo.

Mirrorless cameras:

  • Electronic viewfinder
  • Smaller body, lighter (not the lenses)
  • Silent photo shooting, much quieter than a DSLR shutter.
  • Better autofocus with excellent eye and face autofocus, great speed. Mirrorless cameras autofocus more accurately than DSLRs.
  • Better for video: Their design is optimized for videos as you use a constant live view for shooting videos. Also, manufacturers are prioritizing mirrorless cameras. You can expect better video performance over DSLRs in the future.
  • Dedicated RF lenses for mirrorless cameras. Although the lens range is smaller than for DSLRs, Canon and Nikon now devote almost all of their lens development efforts to creating mirrorless lenses. However, by releasing lens adapters for its EOS R full-frame mirrorless cameras, Canon has extended the capability of these cameras to use the entire range of EF DSLR lenses. Same for Nikon.

DSLRs:

  • Optical viewfinder.
  • Native optics developed over 30 years.
  • Better battery life.
  • Excellent photos and videos.

Verdict

While Mirrorless cameras have newer technology, DSLRs make up for it with a longer battery life and an optical viewfinder.

However, mirrorless is the best for shooting videos. The newer, mirrorless lenses usually have features like high-tech focus actuators and silent stepping motor autofocus technology.

This allows for smooth filming with little to no sound when changing focus. These DSLR lenses weren't designed with this in mind.
